Predicting

What happens next?

  • Use titles, pictures, experience to make predictions
  • Ask group to discuss your predictions
  • Ask group to read first part of text (approximately one or two paragraphs)

Clarifying

What does it mean?

  • Ask the group to identify words and phrases that are not understood
  • Ask group to help by using context clues and picture clues
  • If word remains unknown, teacher clarifies

Questioning

What questions could I ask?

  • Ask questions: Literal, Inferential, Evaluative
  • Choose children to answer
  • Ask children to answer question and discuss answer
  • Ask children to discuss question type

Summarising

What have we read?

  • Summarise what group has read
  • Be brief and cover main points only
  • Ask group to change or add to your summary or necessary

Predicting

Choose another leader (Repeat Questioning. Continue cyle ofo questioning, clarifying, summarising)

  • Predict what you think the next sentence will be about
  • Use last sentence, headings, pictures, own experiences
  • Discuss predictions with group
