The Think2Read Programme is an engaging and sustainable whole school approach to comprehension instruction from the early years upwards. It offers a complete teaching resource of six modules with full lesson plans, quality activities and in-depth assessments (in print-out form and as downloadable whiteboard powerpoints) that systematically helps you teach reading comprehension strategies the reciprocal way. Children learn progressive skills that show them how to summarise, retell, predict, clarify, question to find meaning for themselves and become enthusiastic readers and writers with a passion for group enquiry.
Comprehension Modules for Years 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6 - one year programme
Downloadable quality full colour one-hour lesson resources with addition of video footage and animated whiteboard ppt. plus intermediate/review skills assessment that correlates with NC, Assessment Focuses and QCA marking system.
Number of Modules, length of lesson and focus of content will differ slightly according to Year group.
Module 1 (7 sessions) Literal Questioning
How to be a Text Patroller (who, what, where?)
- Introduction to SPEC - Summarising/retelling, Prediction, Enquiry, Clarifying strategies.
- Purpose of reading.
- How Key words paint a picture.
- How to gather literal information to consciously generate and answer literal questions from text and pictures.
- Summarising & retelling (including assessment of literal, summarising & retelling comprehension answering & questioning skills)

Module 2 (5 sessions) Prediction
- How to gather clues to anticipate what will happen
- How to Predict.
- Understanding Cause and effect.
- Anticipating what may have happened or what may happen next. Gathering of prediction clues to consciously generate and answer prediction questions from text and pictures.
- Summarising & retelling problem & resolution. (including assessment of prediction, summarising & retelling comprehension answering & questioning skills).

Module 3 (7 sessions) Inference Questioning
How to be a Text Detective (Why? How I know.)
- How to infer and make deductions.
- How to search for clues to consciously generate and answer own inference questions from text and images.
- Identifying difference between literal and inference.
- Consolidation of literal, prediction, inference, retelling and summarising sequencing skills and questioning. (including assessment).

Module 4 (5 Sessions) Clarifying
How to 'crack the code' and make sense of words and concepts
- Clarification Interpreting and defining meaning from context.
- Linking known and unknown words to make meaning.
- Skimming & scanning for synonyms.

- Consolidation of clarification skills (assessment).

Module 5 (4 Sessions) Evaluation
How to be a SPECtacular private detective ('I think..'My experience linked to the author's meaning)
- How to identify clues that link to characters' feelings, behaviour and motives.
- How to link what you think, feel or have personally experienced with evidence from text and pictures.
- How to consciously gather clues to generate and answer own evaluation questions about text and images.
- Consolidation of evaluation skills (assessment).

- How to explore fiction and non-fiction using the Reciprocal framework in teams.
