Many primary teachers will agree that they received limited college instruction on how to effectively teach comprehension reading skills or facilitate debates and a ‘community of enquiry’ in the classroom.

There are limited resources available that provide teachers with explicit reading comprehension and transferable thinking instruction based on the meta-cognitive approach.

Studies show that explicit comprehension intervention and philosophical discussion can significantly improve a child’s reading ability, enjoyment of reading and encourages them to read a wider range of material. It also enhances their ‘understanding’, reasoning and learning across the curriculum and develops their confidence to generate questions and research information efficiently to support their personal learning.

The training and resources have been successfully tried and tested over a period of five years in response to a gap in the market place for supportive comprehension resources. They have been enthusiastically evaluated and endorsed by teachers and literacy experts (National Primary Strategy specialists, Exeter University, Plymouth University, Liverpool JM University) and local authorities across Britain. They are based on researched and piloted material at primary level and have been adapted and introduced at secondary level in Wales, Birmingham and a number of schools in Devon.
